Varanasi Travel Guide
A simple day-by-day plan, money-saving tips and the best time to visit โ written for families travelling with kids and elders.
Before You Go
October to March is the most comfortable season, with cooler weather for walking the ghats. April to June is very hot. In the monsoon (July to September) the river rises, ghat steps can go under water and boat service may stop. Plan around the season, especially with kids and elders.
Varanasi has a major railway network (Varanasi Junction and Banaras stations) and an airport, Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, so most families arrive by train. From the station, an auto or e-rickshaw to the southern ghats is the cheapest option. Ask us for the exact route to Samneghat when you book.
Check in at the guest house and rest after the journey. Have a simple meal cooked in the common kitchen. In the evening, go to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the Ganga aarti. Reach early to find a spot, or watch it from a boat. Return for the night.
Take a sunrise boat ride along the ghats while the light is soft. Have breakfast at the guest house. Then visit Kashi Vishwanath Temple; go early if you can to avoid queues. Rest in the afternoon. In the evening, visit Assi Ghat or sit on the rooftop and watch the river.
Sarnath is about 10 km from central Varanasi. It is where the Buddha gave his first sermon, and it has the Dhamek Stupa and a museum. If time is left, visit the BHU campus and its Vishwanath temple or Sankat Mochan before your train.
